2023/24 NHL Season Preview and Predictions

What a whirlwind of a year the 2022-23 NHL season was as we saw records fly while a new team won the Stanley Cup for the first time in their short franchise history.

The Vegas Golden Knights won the 2023 Stanley Cup after finishing the season top of the Pacific Division and the Western Conference, however had only the 5th best record in the NHL behind the Maple Leafs, Devils the Hurricanes and the record-breaking Boston Bruins.

The Boston Bruins glided away from the rest of the league in 2022-23, becoming the most successful regular season team in the history of the NHL, winning 65 games with 5 overtime losses to record 135 points in 82 games, winning 13 more games than any other team in the league.

Vegas’s 4-1 victory in the seven-game Stanley Cup series against the Florida Panthers was the first time the franchise has lifted the Cup since their inception into the league in 2017. The Golden Knights were paying 19.00 to win the Stanley Cup before the season started with the seventh-shortest odds, behind Colorado, Toronto and Carolina.

2023/24 NHL Season Preview and Predictions

None of that really matters now as we look into our crystal ball to predict the outcome of the 2023-24 season, weighing in all of the interesting storylines of the season ahead.

The Toronto Maple Leafs start this season as 9.00 favourites, followed very closely behind by the Colorado Avalanche, Edmonton Oilers, Carolina Hurricanes and New Jersey Devils all at 10.00. It doesn’t take a genius to realize that the 2023-24 season is up for grabs and can really be won by anyone, especially if you consider how last season went.

The Rocket Richard Trophy for most goals in a season looks set to be a fight between 2022-23 winner Edmonton Oilers’ Connor McDavid (3.50) and the Toronto Maple Leafs’ Austin Matthews (4.50) if you refer to the bookies. It is really hard to see anyone outscoring McDavid though with the Oilers captain’s ceiling for points at an unknown number after he increased his scoring by 20 goals and 35 points last season compared with 2021-22.

The Calder Trophy for Rookie of the Year is pretty much a lock, with #1 draft pick Connor Bedard (1.76) set to get as much ice time as he can handle at the Chicago Blackhawks. There has been an enormous amount of hype from the 18-year-old which is completely warranted after scoring 122 goals in 119 games in his 2 seasons with the Regina Pats leading up to the draft.

The James Norris Memorial Trophy as the league’s best defenceman is much more up in the air, even though 2021-22 winner Cale Makar from the Colorado Avalanche is a firm favourite at 2.50. Any of the top-20 defenders have a shot at the Norris Trophy, but I am favouring Buffalo Sabres defender Rasmus Dahlin to continue his progression as one of the league’s best D-men. Buffalo look like they will be a playoff contender this season and if they can get there for the first time in 13 seasons, the Swede is going to be a key reason why they will have a shot at the Cup.
