New Zealand vs Australia First Test Match Tips

Australia hasn’t lost a test series against New Zealand since 1990 and they are not about to let the Black Caps break that trend. Both test teams have been in good form and this series will likely go down to the wire.

You have to back the Aussies though with their big four, Pat Cummins, Mitch Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon all in devastating form this summer. The Aussie bowlers have been the key to the Australian success, either giving their batters a comfortable total to chase or defending moderate scores from their batsman if needed.

Considering his form this summer I like the over on Batter Match Runs for Usman Khawaja which is at just 75.5 runs. The Aussie opener has been solid but maybe not as consistent as he would have liked over the summer, however, a good performance against the Kiwis is expected as he finds his combination with Steve Smith at the other end.

When it comes to the bowlers you can really take your pick. It seems that the Kiwis are not coming into the series with  dedicated spinner which means that the pitch in the nation's capital is expected to be quite green. Josh Hazlewwod was firing against the Windies and was rested in two of the three T20I games. Given he is paying the best return at $2.00 odds for over 4.5 wickets, that is where I will be laying my money.

Australia won the most recent series 3-0, in 2019.
Australia has won 4 of the last 5 Test match series against New Zealand with the fifth resulting in a draw.

New Zealand Form

The Kiwis have been in fine touch in the long version of the game, not losing a test series since their 0-3 whitewash at the hands of England in June 2022.

The Black Caps have drawn their series withPakistan and Bangladesh and another with England, while sweeping their series with Sri Lanka and most recently with South Africa in February, 2024.

Kane Williamson hit three centuries in 4 innings against the Proteas, while Rachin Ravindra scored 240 in the first batting innings of the series.

The Kiwis had 4 bowlers take 6 wickets each in the series, however it was Mitchell Santner and Kyle Jamieson who reached the tally in just one match. William O'Rourke was the pick of the Kiwi bowlers against South Africa taking 9 wickets in 2 matches with a strike-rate of 21.44.

New Zealand Squad

Tim Southee (c), Tom Blundell (wk), Devon Conway, Matt Henry, Scott Kuggeleijn, Tom Latham, Daryl Mitchell, Will O'Rourke, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Mitchell Santner, Neil Wagner, Kane Williamson, Will Young.

Australia Form

The Australian test squad has been in good form winning 4 of 5 matches in 2024, with just the one blemish coming from their 1-1 series draw with the West Indies after sweeping Pakistan 3-0.

Steve Smith took over from David Warner as opener after his retirement from test cricket after the series with Pakistan and put in a decent performance, with two not outs and a top-score of 91* in 4 innings.

The Australian bowlers were once again the danger for the home team against the West Indies, just as they were against Pakistan. Josh Hazlewood caused the most disruption with 14 wickets in two matches with a best figures of 5/35.

Australia Squad

Pat Cummins (c), Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh, Michael Neser, Matthew Renshaw, Steve Smith (vc), Mitchell Starc
