Melbourne Renegades vs Perth Scorchers Big Bash League  Match Preview and Tips

Perth are on a quest for a third consecutive Big Bash League title and their defence will begin with a trip to Geelong to take on the Renegades (0-1).

The Renegades failed to get victory in their opening match against the Sixers, being too loose in their bowling attack in the opening and closing overs, and a repeat performance against the Scorchers will have a mirrored result.

With Aaron Hardie and Josh Inglis at the top of the batting order for Perth, it is expected that the Scorchers will have the batting depth to post a defendable score or never be ruled out of a chase this season.

After a mediocre showing from Melbourne against Sydney, I am backing Perth to get their BB13 campaign off with a win. I expect Hardie to score at least 20 runs and Inglis to hit a couple of fours.

  • Perth have won all 4 games against Melbourne over the last 2 seasons of BBL.
  • Aaron Hardie scored 460 runs in BBL12, the most of any batsman.
  • Josh Inglis scored 431 runs in BBL12, the third-most runs of all batsmen.
  • Josh Inglis hit an average of 2.4 fours per match last season.
  • There were 34 fours hit in two games at GMHBA Stadium in BBL12.

BBL11 & 12 Results
22-Jan-2023: Scorchers won by 10 runs
01-Jan-2023: Scorchers won by 5 wickets (with 2 balls remaining)
26-Dec-2021: Scorchers won by 8 wickets (with 19 balls remaining)
22-Dec-2021: Scorchers won by 21 runs

Melbourne Renegades Form

The Renegades lost their opening match to the Sydney Sixers, allowing their opposition to get the best of them at the start of the innings, scoring 58 runs off the first 5 overs of the match. The final two overs also proved to be costly, with Tom Rogers and Kane Richardson allowing the Sixers to score 31 runs off the final 12 balls of their innings.

With Quinton De Kock playing in Abu Dhabi it was up to Nick Maddison and Joe Clark to open, however, the pair fell for six runs each, which put pressure directly on the chase. Jake Fraser-McGurk did well in three, scoring 48 from 24 balls and Aaron Finch and (48) and Will Sutherland (51) did their bit, but the Renegades eventually fell 8 runs short of the 175 run total.

Melbourne Renegades Squad

Joe Clarke (England), Quinton de Kock (South Africa), Harry Dixon, Aaron Finch, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Mackenzie Harvey, Ruwantha Kellapotha, Nathan Lyon, Nic Maddinson (c), Shaun Marsh, Fergus O'Neill, Kane Richardson, Tom Rogers, Peter Siddle, Will Sutherland, Mujeeb Ur Rahman (Afghanistan), Jon Wells, Adam Zampa

Perth Scorchers Form

The Scorchers will be out to win their third BBL title in as many years and despite losing Cameron Brancroft and with Mitch Marsh and Lance Morris likely to miss most of the season due to international duties, the Scorchers will still be able to fill their eleven with players that have been involved with the team during their championship years.

Perth Scorchers Squad

Ashton Agar, Jason Behrendorff, Cooper Connolly, Zak Crawley (England), Laurie Evans (England), Stephen Eskinazi (England), Aaron Hardie, Liam Haskett, Nick Hobson, Josh Inglis, Matthew Kelly, Mitch Marsh, Hamish McKenzie, Lance Morris, Jhye Richardson, Sam Whiteman, Ashton Turner, Andrew Tye

Verdict

Aaron Hardie and Josh Inglis will lead the Scorchers to victory in their opening match.

Hardie will score 20+ runs and Inglis will hit 2 or more fours in the match.
